PROGRAM ASSESSMENT

Program assessment is used to determine if the competencies are being met to match the program learning outcomes. It is not based on individual courses; rather, it encompasses the program as a whole.
The first step in program assessment is determining the program goals and learning outcomes. After these are determined, the competencies are determined and the measurement methods are identified. Finally, the criteria used to measure success are outlined. For example:
Suppose a learning objective for a program is "Communication Skills." Then, the competency of interest might be "Giving an Oral Presentation." In this case, the measure used might be a "Speech" and the criteria used might be "Achieves a 4 or better on a 1-5 scale." In this case, the learning outcome, competency, measure, and criteria are clearly identified.
All programs at Bismarck State College are required to participate in program assessment. This is any prescribed curriculum which offers certificates, certificates of completion, diplomas, or AAS degrees.
Where do I get started?
1. Develop your plan: Start identifying the learning objectives, competencies, measures and criteria for your program. Use this template as a guide:

File Size: 16.52 kb
2. Input in TracDat: All reporting of program assessment is done using TracDat. Programs should have their plans input into TracDat. Contact the faculty member in your area (Assessment Contacts) for questions and help. 3. Implement your plan: Assess your programs during the course of the school year following your plan.
4. Report your results: Report assessment results into TracDat.
5. "Close the Loop": Examine the assessment results to determine if changes in instruction (or curriculum) are needed. Adjust as necessary and start your assessment again.
